Monks busted playing High Stakes Poker

One bizzarre story thats floating around the poker world right now involves eight Buddhist monks who were recently filmed playing high stakes poker in their hotel room. And when we say high stakes poker, were not talking about some yuppies bringing a collective few thousand dollars to their local Moose Lodge game. Instead, these monks allegedly bet $875,000 total while they were drinking and carrying on.

Apparently, this matter goes much deeper than just a bunch of pious monks committing what many would consider vices at least according to Buddhist monk standards.

Californian Online Poker Worth $200 Million A Year For Coffers

Faced with the prospect of tax increases and cuts to public services, Senate leader Darrell Steinberg and California Senator Roderick Wright have co-authored an online poker bill which could help raise up to $200 million each year for the cash-strapped state.

Highlighting the fact he was supporting the move in order to plug the enormous projected $16 billion shortfall in the states budget, Darrell Steinberg commented:

Once again, were facing horrible cuts to the core public services Californians need and deserve.

UK Bingo Industry Wants Lower Taxes

Once again the UK Bingo Association has appealed to the government to change the bingo tax rates. Currently bingo pays the highest taxes of any form of gambling in the United Kingdom. Chief Executive of the Bingo Association, Paul Talboys is asking the government to cut the bingo tax and says that the tax cut will actually increase tax revenues. Talboys says the government has failed to address the tax disparities leaving the land based bingo industry to struggle to survive.

There are 476 bingo clubs located throughout the United Kingdom. The land based bingo industry employs 13,000 people. Industry figures show that during 2010 more than three million players made 48 million visits to local bingo halls.

Full Tilt Poker/Groupe Bernard Tapie Deal Finalization Could Be Imminent

According to various sources, the deal between the embattled online poker site Full Tilt Poker and its supposed savior, the French investment firm Groupe Bernard Tapie, is set to be finalized, potentially as early as tomorrow.

The noted gaming magazine eGaming Review has stated that the deal between the twopanies should bepleted within the next week or two, but another outlet is predicting an even fasterpletion. The online site Gaming Intelligence has reported that the deal may bepleted as early as tomorrow.

This is Maija. Shes one of the ever-growing dealer team working in Playtechs Latvian dealer studio. Lucky for me she happened to be the first smiling face that greeted me after logging on and launching a game of live blackjack at William Hill.

I say lucky for a number of reasons.

Full Tilt Pro Debts Holding Up Purchase Deal

Groupe Bernard Tapie (GBT) have announced they are hopeful of completing the $80 million purchase of Full Tilt Poker from the DoJ by the end of February.

In the meantime, a due diligence process instigated by GBT in order to reveal the true extent of Full Tilts financial situation has thrown up some extra concerns for the French investment firm. One of those concerns is that a number of Full Tilt Pros apparently still owe up to $20 million to the poker site which, although not the only reason for the delay in negotiations with the DOJ, is nevertheless seen as a substantial one.

Amongst those players with outstanding debts mentioned by GBTs attorney Behnam Dayanim to Gaming Intelligence, are Phil Ivey, David Benyamine, Erick Lindgren, Mike Matusow and Barry Greenstein.

WSOP Circuit Event At Palm Beach Kennel Club Draws 2,607 Players

The first of 12 events at the World Series of Poker Circuit stop at the Palm Beach Kennel Club attracted the biggest tournament field in Florida history. A total of 2,607 put up the $555 buy-in for a shot at the lions share of the $1,250,345 prize pool, which easily beat out the propertys $1 million guarantee.

The turnout was so strong that players began lining up for seats as early as 4 a.m. on Saturday, a good seven hours before play was scheduled to begin.

The line grew so long that scalpers showed up to try and sell entry to the tournament to those at the back of the line for as much as $2,000.

Scotty Nguyen hosting 2012 WSOP Africa

After a relatively uneventful debut in Africa last year, it appears as if WSOP officials are trying to shake things up by naming Scotty Nguyen as host for the 2012 WSOP Africa. This event will run from February 21st-26th in Johannesburg, South Africa, and itll include 6 ring tournaments.

From a pure playing standpoint, the Prince of Poker seems like a good choice to host the ceremonies since hes won 5 gold bracelets in addition to $11.4 million in live poker tournaments. Nguyen is very excited about hosting this event and he was quoted as saying, You know, the Prince has been all over the world baby.
